Once a revered place of worship, the 580-year-old Fahai Temple has developed into one of Beijing’s most coveted museums. Beyond its ancient cypress trees and traditional Chinese architecture, it boasts a collection of Ming Dynasty frescoes that captivate the imagination.

Upon entering the main hall, visitors are transported through time as they marvel at the vivid colors and intricate details of the centuries-old frescoes.
Fahai Temple Museum guide Xu Ke explained the history of the masterpieces. “Crafted by 15 imperial painters during the Ming Dynasty, these frescoes took about four years to complete using natural mineral pigments, ensuring their enduring vibrancy over five centuries.”

The image of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the centerpiece of the Fahai frescoes, stands as a testament to the skill of the artisans, with its delicate veil adorned with intricate snowflake patterns meticulously rendered by thousands of fine lines.

Each detail within the frescoes showcases the pinnacle of Ming Dynasty craftsmanship. Xu Ke noted, “These frescoes not only depict Buddhist lore but also document the evolution of painting techniques, reaching its zenith during the Ming Dynasty.”
Yet, securing a ticket for this cultural marvel, particularly on weekends and holidays, can prove a formidable challenge. Director Chu Pengcheng of the Fahai Temple Cultural Relics Preservation Office said that a strict reservation system has been put in place to protect the treasures, with six visitation sessions per day and a maximum of 15 visitors per session.
